Chembur is a famous suburb in eastern Mumbai located 22 kilometres from the city centre. Chembur derives its name from the word ‘Chimboree’, which translates to ‘large crab’, in the Marathi language. The locality is surrounded by neighbouring suburbs of Deonar, Kurla, Govandi, Mahul, Ghatkopar, and Chunabhatti. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is located about 20 kilometres from Chembur and it is well-connected to prime business districts of Bandra Kurla Complex, Andheri East, Navi Mumbai and Lower Panel.

Chembur houses different colonies like BPCL, Tilak Nagar, Pestom , Chedda Nagar, Tata Colony, HPCL, Shell Colony and Indian Oil Nagar on Mankhurd Link Road. It is a well-developed area of Mumbai and has a cosmopolitan population dominated by Sindhis, Maharashtrians and South Indians. Some of the major industries and institutions housed in the area include Petroleum Corporation Limited, Bhabha Atomic search Centre, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, The Tata Power Company Limited, Rashtriya Chemical & Fertilizers limited and Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Connectivity

Chembur is well-connected to other parts of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai via key arterial roads such as Eastern Highway and the Highway. To decongest traffic on suburban railway system, monorail, a new mode of transport in the city has been proposed. The project will be implemented in two phases - Chembur to Wadala and Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj .

Once completed, the 19.54-kilometre long Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Monorail Corridor will be the second longest monorail corridor in the world. With about 18 stations, this corridor will benefit more than 6, 00,000 commuters between Chembur and Mahalakshmi. The phase one of the monorail corridor is 8.93 kilometres long and will cover 7 stations - Chembur, Petroleum, VN Purav/RC Marg Junction, Fertilizer Township, Colony, Bhakti Park and Depot. The stretch is expected to be operational by March 2014 and the Jacob Circle by December 2015. The 16.4-kilometre long Eastern Freeway enhances road connectivity of Chembur to South by reducing travel time by 30 to 45 minutes. A six-lane double-deck flyover connects Dr. Hans Bhugra Junction on the Western Highway and Amar Mahal Junction on the Eastern express highway. One diversion of the flyover will connect to amanya Tilak Nagar Terminus, another will connect with Nehru Nagar in East and third will connect with LBS Marg in West. This will provide smooth connectivity and hassle-free transit between the Western and Eastern Highway to over 65,000 vehicles. The 560-kilometre long Kurl Kalina flyover over LBS Marg has been operational since August 2012 and is a part of the Santacruz Link Road.
